Happy Handshaking

Jack and his wife went to a party where four other married couples were present. Every person shook hands with everyone he or she was not acquainted with. When the handshaking was over, Jack asked everyone, including his own wife, how many hands they shook. To his surprise, Jack got nine different answers.

This puzzle works very well. One of my new favorites.

I have to agree with pam_i_am and churchap’s first comment.

However (and even more realistically) Jack may be an introvert and only shook 3 peoples hands because he was nervous. Or, maybe his wife is really jealous, so he only shook the guys hands because he didn’t want his wife to think he was flirting with the other wives.

What if the people at the party were already aquainted and Jack and his wife were invited to join the weekly Friday night party. Then it would be 8 and 8 for Jack and his wife.
Also, for the answer to work we would need to know how many hands Jack shook.

Shaking hands goes both ways. If you shake my hand, then I am shaking your hand at the same time. Therefore all the numbers would be the same.

I agree with pam_i_am.

Don’t we need to know how many hands Jack shook in order to use this reasoning? How do you know, for example, that Jack didn’t shake 7 hands, with his wife therefore shaking just 1?
