The Office Guard
A woman walked into an office building, looked at the guard, and said her name was Jenny. The next day she walked into the same building, looked at the same guard and said her name was Julie. What is going on?
Discussion
Wow, so the answer is simply that the woman is inconsistent, and we’re supposed to divine why. Maybe she’s a compulsive liar. Maybe it’s some lame joke between the two of them. Personally I think it’s because she decided over the course of the night to start using her middle name instead.
Secret code of the day. Duh.
The guard’s name is Julie.
Couldn’t she be referring to herself in the first sentence and the guard in the second sentence? 1st day: “my name is Jenny”. 2nd day: “Your name is Julie.” The personal pronouns and lack of quotations used here leave just the sort of ambiguity that would make that work.
