Got it, I heard this one waaay back when I was maybe 6 years old. Another variation is no saw but instead a mirror and a table. First look around the room, then into the mirror, see what you “saw” and use the “saw” to cut the table into two etc…

I have alternative solution.. not insane;) it is impossible to build cellling with bricks. The only one one can build is ghotic arc which is held still by top brick. so the man could divide board into sticks and move the top brick which holds whole (sic!) construction. then it collapses and he can get out.
