On a practical note, on the exterior of the elevator are several springloaded arms held to side of the elevator through the tensions of the elevators main cable. Should the main cable ‘snap’ this tensions is removed, and the arms would spring out and jam against the sides of the shaft, preventing the elevator from falling, at least more than a foot or so.
